What is FSD ‘Shadow Mode’?

Now running FSD version 14.2.1.25, I have to say this version of FSD is fantastic, though no yet ‘perfect’. I’m still intervening at times, which I know is the reason it still requires ‘supervision’. So one might wonder how Tesla’s FSD keeps improving by leaps and bounds with each release. Well one of the reasons is ‘Shadow Mode’. Let me explain:

Whether you subscribe to FSD or not, your car IS running FSD in the background, making the same decisions it would if FSD was enabled, but without actually controlling your car.

So what is Shadow Mode?

While you drive, FSD runs silently receiving information from your car’s cameras and other sensors, making the same decisions it would make if it was actually enabled and in control of your car. You can actually see that it’s running in the background by the new grey line stretching out in front of your car as you drive (when FSD isn’t engaged).

So even though FSD isn’t actually enabled and controlling your car’s path because you’re in full control, what Shadow Mode actually does is it compares your driving decisions (good or bad) with FSD’s decisions and evaluates similarities and differences.

The cool part about Shadow Mode is that the actual driver is ‘always right’ (but have you seen some of those crazy drivers?), and FSD is trying to match the driver’s decisions. Disagreements between the two help ‘teach’ FSD over time to improve it’s decision in similar situations.

So why is Shadow Mode important to Tesla’s competitive advantage?

Autonomy is important to Tesla and to many existing and prospective Tesla owners, and by leveraging millions of cars in Tesla’s fleet for data-gathering and validation Tesla has the ability to build software that is better than the competition by orders of magnitude.

Concerned about Privacy and want to disable Shadow Mode?

Sorry, but the answer is ‘no’. Shadow Mode is a developer tool integrated into the system, not a user-facing feature you can toggle on or off like Autopilot itself, as it’s crucial for FSD.
